Springtime Ideas

Location: Nederland, CO 80466, USA
Mayor Gierlach using the community wide EcoPass
Congratulations to the candidates, and to our town staff for running a successful election. All of the incumbents that ran, were re-elected, which indicates to me that we must be doing things right. Thanks to our citizens for the positive support.

Here are a few things that you can do this spring:
  • April 19: Now that we have issued over 1,600 EcoPasses, let's start using them today!
  • April 19: The deadline to take the Recreation Survey is TODAY to win some cool local prizes. Here is a link to the online survey. Call (303) 396-1606 to access the survey if you did not receive a card with a survey code on it.
  • April 22: Wild Earth Day (see the Wild Bear website for a full schedule)
  • May 2: Learn more about how to create defensible space (against wildfire) on your property at a free training at the Community Center, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. See the Boulder County Forest Health webpage for more information.
  • May 12: Forest fire season has begun – time to address the defensible space on your property. The Boulder County Sort Yard will be open on a limited basis early – see details at the town's website.
  • May 18: We are encouraging residents to have your own Garage Sale. What doesn't sell, you can take to Ned Spring Clean-Up (see below).
  • June 2: Nederland Spring Clean-Up Day – Details are on the town's website here. This may just be my favorite day of the year.
  • June 9: Ponderosa Pine beetle mitigation demonstration in Lyons.
  • Spring 2012: Get an energy audit – Boulder County's grant money will be running out soon, so now is a good time to get in on the action. For more information, visit the EnergySmart website.
  • All of 2012: Pick up your free dog license at the Nederland Police Department. Call (303) 258-3250.
In May, the Board of Trustees will appoint a new Nederland DDA Board. If you are interested in applying, call Town Hall at (303) 258-3266, for an application.

I encourage you to take advantage of these programs. We can all contribute to a healthier community, whether we are forgoing our cars and taking the bus on a trip to Boulder or we ensure the recommended 30-foot radius around our homes is free of flammable materials. The Town has taken a number of steps to make educational resources and even bus passes free to reduce the entry barrier to these activities. Don't let it go to waste.
