What's a Nedhead?

Location: Nederland, CO 80466, USA

The Nedhead Cartoon:

The Nedhead was originally a cartoon character developed by local cartoonist George Blevins in the 1990's.

George had been producing editorial cartoons for the The Mountain-Ear local newspaper in his "Cabin Fever" series. He created the Nedhead character outside of the characters in Cabin Fever. Many of the Nedhead themes are timeless, and examine aspects of Nederland life that are still very relevant today.

With so many overlapping references like rhyming with Ned, and the Grateful Dead, head shops of the 1970's etc., it was a natural fit, but also metaphorically the character's head is also his home.

The Nedhead as a local resident:

The Nedhead character caught on, as well as the the idea of Nederlanders referring to themselves as "Nedheads".

In the Fall of 2011, local resident, Janette Taylor started a closed Facebook group for local residents, with its stated purpose as: "News, photos, events, observations and quizzical inquiries relating to Nederland, Nederland life, and dogs of Nederland." It too, caught on with local residents, and has become a prime news source for local events, emergencies, and public opinion. Because this is a closed group, residents feel a bit more free to express themselves in a respectful way, and therefore this widely popular Facebook group has provided a forum for honest dialogue, which has had a profound impact on communication within the community.

The not so fine print of the Nedhead Facebook group disclaimer reads:
News, photos, events, observations and quizzical inquiries relating to Nederland, Nederland life, and dogs of Nederland.
